Russell’s Reserve 10 Year Old Bourbon

In honor of Father’s Day, Russell’s Reserve 10 Year Old Bourbon ($30) is partnering with Operation Once in a Lifetime (OOIAL). This non-profit provides resources to U.S. Service members. For the month of June, every bottle of Russell’s Reserve sold, a donation will be made to OOIAL to help get our troops home. Jimmy and Eddie Russell think there is nothing else more appropriate on Father’s Day than being home with your family. Such a beautiful message.

I commissioned my dear friend Freddie (aka. Gjunkie) to help me review this bourbon. He has a better palette when it comes to these type of drinks and I felt it necessary to give RR it’s proper review. This is what he had to say.

I’ve been trying to figure out how exactly to review this bourbon, considering the fact that I am not a bourbon drinker. I am a rum drinker. I knew it would be difficult for me to judge it fairly since I have no real experience with bourbon. But I decided to give it a try, and attempt at helping other non-bourbon drinkers know what they’re getting themselves into when getting a bottle of this 10 year old Russell’s Reserve.

If you’re like me, and enjoy drinking stellar rums like Pyrat, Mount Gay, and others on the rocks, then you’ve come to enjoy the full flavor and sweet aftertaste that comes with a good rum. Bourbon is a different beast altogether being distilled primarily from corn, as opposed to sugarcane by-products. This is not a type of drink you just dive into. It takes a long time to develop a palette for it and I’m no different. So I did what any self respecting (cowardly) drinker would do, tried it with 3 ice cubes and let it sit for a few minutes. I made sure the ice melted just enough to take some of the edge off for my first sip.

At first you’ll feel like there’s no reward; a drink with all kick and no sweetness seems silly. But don’t be fooled, it’s not the bourbon, it’s you. This is one of the best bourbons out there. I knew I couldn’t fully grasp how good of a bourbon Russell’s Reserve was without getting a second opinion, so I took it to two friends of mine who love this stuff. Their drink of choice? Old Fashioned; 2oz bourbon, 2 dashes of bitters, 1 splash water, 1 tsp sugar, 1 maraschino cherry, 1 orange wedge. And what did they have to say about Russell’s Reserve? One of the best they’ve ever tried. Their exact description actually was “it’s like an Old Fashioned in a bottle. All the rewards, none of the work!”

In fact, an old fashioned might be the best way for a non-bourbon drinker to start getting into it, and slowly but surely begin to dip your feet into something this sophisticated. Like I said, don’t dive in head first if you’re not a bourbon drinker. This particular brand is even higher proof than your usual at a nice 90 proof. 45% alcohol is no easy feat, specially straight.

With a little training and dedication you’ll come to love this brand. It’s obvious that they know what they’re doing. If you wanna learn a little more about how boubon is made, check out theĀ wikipedia article.

I really appreciate the review Gjunkie was able to give about Russell’s Reserve. Be sure to check out his channels below and support him by Following, LIKING, and/or becoming an avid reader of his blog.
