Both of Manchester’s Premier League clubs are set to be the focus of new documentary series’ on the leading streaming platforms.

The programmes focus on the historic treble-winning seasons of the pair, with Manchester City’s blaze through the 2022/23 campaign mirroring that of Manchester United’s in 1998/99.

And you’ll be able to watch behind-the-scenes footage of both, as well as interviews with the key protagonists, via Netflix and Amazon Prime respectively.

City Slickers

The Premier League football odds suggest that City could well be celebrating more silverware at the culmination of the 2023/24 season.

Those Premier League winner odds make Pep Guardiola’s men a 4/11 favourite to successfully defend their EPL crown, although Arsenal (7/4) won’t be giving up the fight just yet.

In 2022/23, City won English football’s prestigious treble – the Premier League, the Champions League and the FA Cup.

And that glittering campaign is the focal point of Netflix’s documentary ‘Together: Treble Winners’, which charts the ups and downs – mostly ups, it has to be said – of arguably the greatest season in the club’s history.

The Champions League win in particular was an emotional moment for the club – a trophy that had eluded Pep and his players throughout his otherwise trophy-laden stint in charge. After spending more than £1 billion on new players during the Spaniard’s tenure as head coach, they finally got their hands on European football’s ultimate prize.

How did they do it? Together: Treble Winners reveals all, with cameras granted exclusive access to film warts and all. However, it should be noted that the production firm was the club’s own in-house City Studios, so don’t expect anything other than a fluffy re-telling of an incredible season.

The series continues Netflix’s commitment to delivering all-access sporting content to their subscribers, following in the footsteps of the popular Drive to Survive, Full Swing and Break Point, which give viewers behind-the-scenes exclusives from the stars of F1, golf and tennis.

Treble Triumph

Ironically, City had previously worked with Amazon Prime on the All or Nothing series, which has also chronicled seasons in the recent histories of Arsenal and Tottenham too.

But for new show 99, Amazon will take a retrospective look at Manchester United’s stunning treble-winning year of 1999, which saw them also clinch glory in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

Of course, 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the treble triumph – hence the commission, although Amazon have lined up a galaxy of stars to discuss United’s then unprecedented season.

The likes of David Beckham, Gary Neville and Peter Schmeichel feature amongst the interviewees, recalling some of the campaign’s most famous moments – from the incredible comeback victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League final to Ryan Giggs’ wonder goal in the FA Cup game against Arsenal.

Amazon has previously touched upon the 1998/99 season in their Sir Alex Ferguson docuseries ‘Never Give In’, but 99 promises to include never-before-seen archive footage that will appeal greatly to fans of the Red Devils.

These will surely be the new binge watches for all football fans as they await the new season!
