Your Campervan Route In Las Vegas
The route below covers 1730 km and can take anywhere from ten to fourteen days, depending on how long you stop and how long it takes you to complete the drive. The drive is broken up into stops, outlined below.
Stop 1 – Las Vegas To Grand Canyon
The journey from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon National Park can take around four and a half hours, depending on traffic and how often you take breaks. This will take roughly 275 miles on the US-93 South and I-40 East highways.
Your journey will take you past the Hoover Dam between Nevada and Arizona. You can also enjoy the stunning landscapes of the Mojave Desert, featuring its beautiful Joshua trees. As you approach the Grand Canyon, the terrain becomes more rugged, and you can expect to spot coyotes and bighorn sheep.
The Canyon itself is over 270 miles long and 18 miles wide. The rocks here date back over 1 billion years, offering a once-in-a-lifetime view that you will always remember. Make sure you have your cameras ready!
Stop 2 – Grand Canyon To Sedona
The next leg takes roughly 109 miles as you leave the Grand Canyon and head to Sedona. The Grand Canyon does offer some fantastic campgrounds and RV parks where you can stay the night. We recommend booking your spot ahead of time, as parking or camping here is a popular choice.
Once you leave the Grand Canyon, you will mostly take the AZ-64 South and I-40 East highways. You can also travel on the US-180 East and AZ 64 E/Desert View Dr and US-89 S/N 89, but these routes add a few extra miles. These highways are toll roads, and you can expect the journey to take two hours.
At Sedona, you can enjoy the natural water park, visit Cathedral Rock, and head to the Chapel of the Holy Cross for fantastic views across the city.
Stop 3 – Sedona To Phoenix
The next leg of your journey is a 117-mile drive to Phoenix. It can take around two hours and involves taking the I-17 South or the AZ 179 South and I-17 South. Outside Sedona is Rimrock, home to the Montezuma Well and a Castle. It is a little detour, but we think seeing the cliff dwelling built into a limestone cliff is worth it.
Phoenix has plenty to do, including museums and historical landmarks. There are also plenty of art galleries and music galleries that will entertain everyone. You can stay over in Phoenix, choosing from a variety of campsites and RV parks.
Stop 4 – Phoenix To Joshua Tree National Park
After Phoenix, you will travel 222 miles to Joshua Tree National Park, which can take over three and a half hours on the I-10 West. Leaving Phoenix, you will drive through the Sonoran Desert, home to iconic cacti and stunning desert vistas. It’s worth stopping along the way to enjoy these glorious views.
As you drive towards Joshua Tree National Park, the landscape changes drastically. This is a good place to stop, as there is much to see and do. The park rangers and many climbing routes run plenty of programs. Camping at the park is very popular, so visiting during the off-season is best to guarantee a spot.
Stop 5 Joshua Tree National Park To Las Vegas
To complete your journey, take a 196-mile drive from Joshua Tree National Park to Las Vegas. This time, your route will take you to the Mojave National Preserve. It can take up to four hours as you pass through beautiful towns and cities. Twentynine Palms is worth stopping at to enjoy a beautiful park and plenty of great eateries.
At the National Preserve, you will encounter well-preserved ghost towns and the Kelso Dunes, which are excellent for hiking and sandboarding. After stopping here, you can complete your journey and arrive in Las Vegas, ready to enjoy the fun in store.
