Night shift workers are a special breed. While the rest of the world is snoozing, they’re keeping things running, fighting off yawns, keeping their focus, and often battling a body clock that just wants to quit. They really do deserve more praise, and yeah, you can count on your night shift workers to be efficient (or as efficient as you can be when not much happens during the night).
But anyway, here’s the thing; working through the night can take a serious toll on health (humans weren’t made to do this like a cat was). So, if businesses want to keep their night teams happy, energised, and healthy, they’ve got to step up and do more than the bare minimum.
Now, with all of that said, here’s how to keep the night crew thriving.
A Break Room Worth Breaking For
For starters, you really need to keep in mind that no one recharges in a break room that’s just a couple of chairs and a sad kettle. Really, you can’t expect that! Actually, night shift workers need a space that feels like an actual retreat, even if it’s just 15 minutes. Ideally, a place where they can unwind and perk up at the same time. Now, it really helps if you think about refreshments too (that ideally go beyond that sad kettle).
Ideally, you should forget instant coffee or tap water from the kitchen sink. Instead, you should look into investing in commercial coffee machines, maybe even ones that offer multiple options (like Americanos and lattes for example). Just think of it this way; you’re saying “You’re valued, and your energy matters.” Throw in a few tea and hot chocolate options, and suddenly the break room becomes a mini haven.
Ditch the Junk Food Trap
Just think of this scenario for just a second; it’s 3 am, the vending machine is calling, and the options are crisps, a chocolate bar, or a regret-filled sugar rush. It’s not like there are any takeout places open at 3 am (unless you want food poisoning).
So, night shifts are tough on the body, and fueling up on junk doesn’t help anyone. If you have a vending machine try to stock on something healthy, if not, well, just offer a basket of free snacks (which is even better) that’s filled with fruit, nuts, and granola bars. There won’t be any crashes with something healthy like this.
Help Them Get Better Sleep
Getting good sleep when the sun’s blazing outside is a nightmare. Have you ever tried it? It feels next to impossible, right? Well, it’s one of the biggest struggles for night shift workers, and businesses that help them sleep smarter are the ones that truly care. Ideally, just share practical tips on blackout curtains, earplugs, or white noise machines, or even provide some of these things if you want to.
Look Out for Their Mental Health
It’s really best to not sugarcoat it, but night shifts can be lonely, and the lack of daylight can hit morale hard. Really, it can hit really hard! So, just supporting mental health is crucial for keeping spirits up. Ideally, as a business owner, you should look into offering access to mental health resources, whether it’s counselling, support hotlines, or wellness programmes.
