Another Comic-Con has ended, and we have once again been left in its glorious wake. Amid the blur of panels, a movie trailer containing nearly as many beloved character faces as the convention itself was released. The film: Stephen Spielberg’s Ready Player One, based on Ernest Cline’s novel of the same name.
For those of you that aren’t familiar, the story is set in Columbus, Ohio around 30 years in the future. In their dystopian society, a virtual reality world, OASIS, is used for everything from going to work and school to (unsurprisingly) playing games. When the creator of OASIS dies he has no heir. So, he leaves an Easter egg inside the game with his fortune as the prize for the one who finds it. We jump in five years after the announcement has been made, and follow protagonist Wade Watts on his journey after finding one of the three required keys.
Obviously a story like this has great potential to be pretty epic on its own, but Cline managed to throw an unexpected element into the mix to make things that much better—nostalgia. In the novel, the creator of OASIS had a great love for everything 1980’s, and set the game up so that others with at least knowledge of the era would stand the best chance at winning. That said, Ready Player One contains basically everything 80’s melded together.
Of course, there is some backlash surrounding the amount of character cameos and their role in the structure of the story. But, however you feel, it at the very least looks to be pretty amazing as far as visuals go. You can check out the trailer below.
