The Maven Kentucky Straight Bourbon: A $199 Toasted Barrel Debut

The Maven is a $199 toasted barrel Kentucky straight bourbon, 94 proof and 7+ years, with a 99-point Double Gold from San Francisco. A bottle is on its way for review.

A new bourbon worth paying attention to just landed on my radar, and a bottle is already on its way to me. The Maven is the debut release from The Maven Distillery in Shelbyville, Kentucky, a toasted barrel Kentucky straight bourbon built from a blend of six whiskeys drawn from a library the distillery calls America’s most diverse private bourbon library. Master Distiller Kevin Curtis and Master Blender Steve Hughes matured whiskeys in toasted American oak and finished others in toasted casks across five oak types, including Kentucky Chinkapin, Pacific Northwest Garryana, French oak and Mizunara from Japan. It is 94 proof, aged 7+ years, and it took a 99-point score and Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. I have not opened a bottle yet, so no tasting notes from me, but I am excited to crack it open and try it as soon as it arrives. For the bourbon drinker who chases allocated bottles, it is $199, highly allocated, at select Kentucky retailers now, with New York, California and nationwide online availability to follow.
