A few months back, I introduced you to the Don Q brand and touched on their 150+ years of rum making. Now, I’m back to share with you a new favorite from the Serrallés family, their Don Q Gran Añejo rum.

Don Q Gran Añejo rum

Similar to Don Q‘s other varieties, Gran Añejo is made with no additives, artificial sugars or coloring. It’s just a super premium rum first aged in American white oak barrels, and then carefully aged in Spanish sherry casks using the Solera aging system. Because of its lengthy contact with the barrel, the rum takes on hints of vanilla and dark caramel, making it perfect for enjoying neat or in a cocktail. Additionally, while nosing the spirit, you will notice a complex blend of cigar tobacco and molasses that compliments the dark caramel.

Gran Añejo’s smooth finish is thanks to the culmination of rums aged 9 to 12 years and Solera aged rums aged up to 50 years. It’s truly a special spirit. Of course, what else would you expect from Destilería Serrallés, one of America’s oldest family-owned businesses with a rum making tradition that that started in 1865. That’s six generations of masters producing some of the finest rums the world has tasted. The distillery is located in Ponce, Puerto Rico, where the award-winning Don Q rum is their #1 selling rum on the island.

Featured Cocktail Recipe: Don Q Old Fashioned

One of my all-time favorite cocktails is an old fashioned, and I especially like an old fashioned made using rum. It’s a unique take going with a rum over a whiskey because of the overall sweetness associated with rum.

Take a look at the recipe below and try making one for yourself.

  • 2oz. Don Q Gran Añejo rum
  • splashClub soda
  • Sugar cubeor 1/2 tsp Sugar
  • dashesAngostura bitters
