These new Heng Balance Lamps are a beautifully inventive combination of lamp, art, and just a little bit of magic.
The lamps, created by award winning designer Li Zanwen, almost feel like their purpose is more to entertain us with calming illusion rather than be functional devices. Their on/off switches are triggered by magnets hidden inside of two spheres attached by string to the inside top and bottom of the wooden frames. When the orbs meet (or get as close as they can, as the strings prevent them from ever making contact), they serenely sway together in the center of the frame, simultaneously making it seem like the bottom sphere is levitating, and turning on the lamp. The light itself is emitted from the inside of the beech frame via an embedded track.
If you’re itching to get your hands on one of these lamps, you’re not alone. The Heng lamp series blew away its €10,000 Kickstarter campaign, ending with €387,176. Crazy, but not surprising. You can now preorder the lamps for just $44.95 here. They’ll be available in square, round, and ellipse shapes, with color options of black red or white for the ellipse style, or light or dark wood for all three. They are expected to ship about June of this year.
