In the early 1900’s over 2500 photographs were taken by the New South Wales Police Department of criminals as they brought them in off the street. They captured each of them in their street clothes looking confused and some slightly embarrassed. You can see the photographs on display at the Justice and Police Museum in Sydney. If you don’t plan on being down under anytime soon, the museum’s curator, Peter Doyle, has had two books published featuring the images, including their back stories: City of Shadows & Crooks Like Us.
