In 2019, Samsung asked people to spend $1,980 on a phone that folded in half. On September 9, Apple unveiled its first foldable, the iPhone Duo, at $1,999. Nineteen dollars and seven years of other companies’ mistakes separate the two, and that gap is the whole story.
The iPhone Duo is for the person who carries an iPhone in one pocket and an iPad mini in the bag, and for anyone who looked at a Galaxy Fold and thought they’d buy one if it ran iOS. It opens into a 7.6-inch screen, closes to roughly the footprint of a passport, and goes up for preorder on October 16. The more interesting question is whether this is the moment foldables stop being a curiosity, the way the first iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch took their categories from niche to normal.
Why the iPhone Duo belongs next to the first iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch
Apple has rarely been first. The iPhone arrived in 2007, years after BlackBerry and Palm had put email in business travelers’ pockets. The iPad followed a decade of Windows tablet PCs almost nobody wanted. The Apple Watch was announced in 2014, after Pebble and Samsung’s Galaxy Gear had already shipped. Each time, Apple waited, watched the category stumble, and then released something that made everyone else’s version look like a rough draft.
The iPhone Duo follows that pattern more closely than anything Apple has shipped since the Watch. Samsung, Google, and Honor have spent years sorting out hinges, creases, and apps that fall apart on an odd screen shape. Apple arrives with iOS 27 rebuilt around the fold. It also brings Split View, which runs two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time, and Netflix, Zoom, and Slack already have versions adapted for launch day. CEO John Ternus called it “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original.” That’s a press-release line, but for once it doesn’t sound like a stretch.
The less flattering half of the comparison is the part I find more convincing. The first iPhone had no App Store and no 3G. The first iPad had no camera. The first Apple Watch was slow enough that most owners stopped opening third-party apps. Apple’s category-defining products have almost always been compromised first drafts that the second and third generations fixed, and the Duo looks like a member of that club as well.

Where the first foldable iPhone falls short
Weight is the obvious problem. At 254 grams, the iPhone Duo is the heaviest iPhone Apple has made, five grams more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Closed, it’s 11.3mm thick, about 29 percent thicker than the Pro Max. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 weighs 201 grams and closes to 9.7mm. Apple’s “thinnest iPhone ever” claim only holds when the phone is open, which is not how it sits in your pocket.
The camera is the compromise I’d feel most. The Duo has no dedicated telephoto lens, and its 2x zoom is a crop from the main sensor. Most of my travel video comes off a Sony a7 IV and a DJI Pocket 3, but the phone is still the camera that’s always on me, and giving up real zoom is a meaningful step back from the Pro line.
The fine print matters too. Apple hasn’t published a fold-cycle durability rating for the hinge, a figure Samsung advertises for the Fold. Apple’s footnotes say Siri AI and other server-based Apple Intelligence features come with daily usage limits, and that Apple plans to charge for expanded access later. Siri AI also won’t launch in the EU at first. For a phone Apple is partly selling on AI, that’s worth knowing before you spend two grand.
How the iPhone Duo compares to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and iPhone 18 Pro Max
In the U.S., the gap between the iPhone Duo and Samsung is small: $1,999 against $1,899.99 for the Galaxy Z Fold 8. That extra $100 buys iOS, the A20 Pro, Touch ID in the side button, an under-display selfie camera, and Apple Pencil support coming later this year. You give up 53 grams and 1.6mm of pocket thickness. You’re also trusting a first-generation hinge against a company on its eighth Fold.
The iPhone Duo makes more sense measured against Apple’s own lineup. The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. The Duo costs $700 more and weighs only five grams more, and it gives you a screen 50 percent larger when open. What you lose is the telephoto camera and a slimmer profile. If you buy a Pro Max mainly for the big screen, the Duo is a better answer to that need. If you buy it for the camera, it isn’t.
Is the iPhone Duo a good travel phone?
The iPhone Duo’s travel case is stronger than Apple lets on. Apple compares the folded phone to a passport, and open, its screen is only a little smaller than the iPad mini’s 8.3 inches. On a long flight or a sea day, that’s one less device to charge and pack. StandBy now works on either screen with the phone propped like a tent, even off the charger, so it doubles as a bedside clock in a hotel room or a cabin. Apple’s $129 Folio adds a built-in kickstand, which should be handy on a tray table.
The eSIM-only design deserves more thought if you travel internationally. Travel eSIMs are easy to buy now, and Apple says more than 500 carriers support the standard. There’s no fallback, though. You can’t grab a physical SIM from a kiosk in a port where eSIM coverage is thin, and in some places that option still matters.
Who should buy the iPhone Duo, and who should wait
The iPhone Duo makes sense if you’re already in Apple’s ecosystem, read or watch a lot on your phone, and carry a tablet you’d gladly leave at home. It also makes sense if you’ve wanted a foldable for years but weren’t willing to leave iOS for one.
Wait if the camera is why you upgrade, if you notice every gram in your pocket, or if you’d rather let someone else find out how the hinge holds up after a year. History says the second-generation Apple product is usually the one to own. The Apple Watch Series 2 added built-in GPS and swim-proofing. The iPad 2 added cameras and was a third thinner.
I don’t think the Duo is the phone everyone should buy in October. I do think it’s the phone that decides whether most of us carry foldables by 2030, which is exactly what the first iPhone did in 2007. Preorders open October 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific, and the Duo lands in stores October 23.
