Audio-Technica ATH-AWX7000 Flagship Headphones

Audio-Technica's ATH-AWX7000 pairs Kiso cypress housings with Echizen lacquer and a new 58 mm driver. $3,799, wired only, available now.

Audio-Technica just made its closed-back flagship a lot harder to ignore. The ATH-AWX7000 pairs Kiso cypress housings, each hand-finished with Echizen lacquer, with a new 58 mm Hybrid Matrix Diaphragm and the company’s HXDT molding process, a combination aimed at deep bass, a wide soundstage, and detail in busy recordings. The numbers back up the ambition: 5 Hz to 50,000 Hz frequency response, 97 dB/mW sensitivity, 48 ohm impedance, and a 353 gram build on a magnesium frame with machined aluminum sliders and Japanese deerskin on the headband and earpads. There is no Bluetooth and no noise cancellation. You get two cables, a 3.0 meter unbalanced lead with a 6.3 mm plug and a 2.5 meter balanced lead with a 4-pin Neutrik XLR connector, plus a hard carrying case. Audio-Technica calls these its finest headphones ever. At $3,799, available now, they sit $300 above the open-back ATH-ADX7000: a closed back with flagship treatment. I have not heard them yet, but fed from a good turntable and amp, the wired-only design makes its case on paper.
