Google is continuing to work on projects outside of their search engine, with the latest being a solar power initiative called, Project Sunroof.
Using information they have already collected from Google Maps, Project Sunroof engineers are able to calculate how much sun falls on a roof. This data is later used to estimate the amount of money you could save from your electric bill, how many solar panels your roof would require, and where to find a person to install said panels.
