As technology continues to take over nearly every aspect of our lives, we have begun to run the risk of losing one of the most important hands-on art forms: playing music. Luckily, the people over at Zivix have found an ingenious way to address this problem, as well as a few others, with their new jamstik ($300).

jamstik controller

This 15-inch piece of technology resembles (and for all intensive purposes is) the neck of a guitar, complete with frets and strings. The best part about the jamstik is it is not just for playing around on, but can help you learn and compose music as well. Once paired with your iPad, iPhone, or Mac, it uses infrared light-sensing technology in its fretboard to send real-time feedback that can be used for musical practice or dictation. Zivix has also released several new apps to bring these uses of jamstik to the next level.

But this ultra-portable innovation in music isn’t just for novices. Because of features like being a MIDI enabled controller (that’s right, you can use it to play games like GarageBand), or the fact that it can create the sound of virtually any instrument, jamstik gives experienced musicians the ability to play compose in a way that is only limited by their own creativity.
