Already dreaming of your summer family holiday?

Europe offers endless incredible travel destinations, from beautiful cities with rich history to sensational national parks home to amazing wildlife. However, it is the beaches of Europe that remain the firm favourite for most families with children. Often all you need is a bucket and spade on the sand to keep the little ones entertained, and if that fails there are exhilarating water-sports, aqua parks, and glorious clifftop walks to be enjoyed.

Browse these four fantastic family-friendly beach destinations in Europe to find your perfect holiday spot for summer 2023.

Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal, from quiet fishing coves to bustling beach resorts. The largely calm waters make it a great spot for swimming as well – although you should always take care to swim safely in supervised sections.

Albuferia is one of the best family-friendly destinations in the Algarve. This fishing-village-turned-major-resort has a modern marina that acts as a base for dolphin watching expeditions, sailing adventures, and scuba diving excursions. Past meets present in the town so there is plenty to see in addition to a range of family-friendly restaurants.

Corfu, Greece

Corfu is unquestionably one of the most picturesque Greek Islands. Its turquoise waters, dramatic coastline, and lush interior have astonished travellers for centuries, and now this beauty attracts hordes of tourists each year.

As well as its enchanting beaches, there are lots of things to do in Corfu to suit children. Epic Aqualand is a waterpark that guarantees thrills all day. Kids will also love getting up close and personal with marine life at the Corfu Aquarium. Older children might appreciate a walking tour of the town, or a scenic horse trek through the olive groves.

Costa Blanca, Spain

Spain’s Costa Blanca is an enduringly popular European beach destination. This 200-km stretch of coastline is in the south-east of Spain and includes the beloved beach resort of Benidorm. The long beaches backed by family-friendly hotels and restaurants make holidaying with kids a breeze.

Benidorm also boasts a theme park, zoo, and pretty nature reserve characterised by waterfalls and walkways. Scuba diving is another popular family-friendly activity in Benidorm. It is worth noting that you cannot fly directly to Benidorm, but airport transfers from Alicante to Benidorm only take 45 minutes.

Devon, England

England might not strike you as one of the best beach destinations in Europe, but its southern coastline has many places that work well for a family holiday. Although weather can be more unpredictable than in mainland Europe, the summer sees plenty of sunshine and stable temperatures.

Devon is the best choice for younger children. Long beaches such as the popular Woolacombe Bay are ideal for families seeking privacy and plenty of space to body board. Cornwall, a little way along the coast, is best for older children who want to learn to surf.
