Fifty ocean cruises. Zero American river cruises. That changes on October 17, when I board American Ranger for the Hudson River Fall Foliage sailing. It will be my seventh river cruise and my first on an American river, and I am bringing a three-camera crew to film it all as a four-part series for All Aboard with Joe.
I picked a good season to jump in. American Ranger was christened September 24 at Historic Catskill Point, right in the middle of her inaugural nine-day sailing from New York City to Albany. American Cruise Lines says the 2026 Hudson season is largely sold out, with the final departure of the year leaving October 25. My October 17 sailing is one of the last of the season. For a brand-new ship on a route nobody else sails overnight, that is a debut most cruise lines would frame.
A 130-guest ship with a balcony in every cabin
American Ranger is the fourth ship in American Cruise Lines’ Patriot class and the company’s third new ship of 2026, following the riverboat American Encore and the Patriot-class American Maverick. She carries 130 guests, and every cabin has a private balcony, including the single-occupancy staterooms. Up top there is a lounge with a walking track, plus a chart room, main restaurant, casual cafe, fitness center, and a laundry room. At 243 feet she is small enough that you will recognize your fellow passengers by day two.
The only overnight river cruises on the Hudson
The nine-day Fall Foliage itinerary runs between New York City and Albany, calling at Sleepy Hollow, West Point, Kingston and Hyde Park, and Catskill, with guided excursions included at every stop. The excursion list reads like a Hudson Valley greatest hits album: the FDR Presidential Library, the Vanderbilt Mansion, the estates at Olana and Lyndhurst, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, a tasting at Whitecliff Vineyard, and apple picking around Sleepy Hollow during its Halloween season.
Here is the part that got my attention: these are the only overnight river cruises operating on the Hudson. Nobody else sells this waterway as a multi-day cruise. And at 130 guests, Ranger sails with about a third fewer passengers than the 190-guest riverboats that dominate the Rhine and Danube, the rivers I know from six European sailings. Fewer passengers means a quieter sun deck, no lines at the gangway, and a dining room where the crew learns your name. That math works.
Building a ship every four months
American Cruise Lines is expanding at a pace I have not seen from a domestic line. CEO Charles B. Robertson puts the orderbook at roughly one new ship every four months, and Ranger will not hold the “newest cruise ship in the country” title for long. Three more arrive in 2027: the Patriot-class American Mariner and American Navigator, plus the 180-guest riverboat American Anthem for the Columbia and Snake Rivers.
American is not the only line betting big on rivers right now. Trafalgar is launching Rhine and Danube itineraries in 2026, and Celebrity’s new river fleet arrives in 2027. The river cruise boom is real, and for once the Americans are building ships for it too.
Why I am going now
I have spent six river cruises learning how Europe does it. I wrote about American Cruise Lines years ago when they were pushing into Alaska, and I have watched the domestic river market grow up ever since. Now I get to see how America does it: a month-old ship, peak foliage, the Hudson Valley at Halloween, and a camera crew. If a sold-out debut season is any indication, I am not the only one who thinks this was worth the wait.
Questions People Ask About American Ranger and Hudson River Cruises
Can I still book American Ranger for 2026?
The 2026 Hudson season is largely sold out, and the final departure leaves October 25. If that sailing still has space, it is your last shot this year. Otherwise the 2027 program opens with Summer Classic departures in June and Fall Foliage returning in September, sailing roundtrip from Albany.
How is a Hudson River cruise different from a European river cruise?
Scale and scenery. American Ranger carries 130 guests, about a third fewer than the big Rhine and Danube boats, and these are the only overnight river cruises on the Hudson. Expect American history at every stop, West Point, the FDR Library, Gilded Age mansions, instead of castles and cathedrals. No passport required.
Who is an American Cruise Lines sailing best for?
Travelers who want small-ship cruising without leaving the country. Excursions are included, every ship carries under 200 guests, and every American Ranger cabin has a private balcony. It fits first-time river cruisers and anyone who finds big ocean ships overwhelming.
