Silversea has spent decades perfecting life at sea. Now it’s trying land. The Cormorant at 55 South, the cruise line’s first-ever hotel, welcomes its first guests on October 19 in Puerto Williams, Chile, and it comes with a superlative: the southernmost hotel in the world.
Built for the Drake Passage Dodge
The hotel exists for one itinerary: Silversea’s Antarctica Fly Cruise. Instead of sailing the Drake Passage, guests fly from southern Chile to King George Island. The Cormorant is the bookend: a night in Santiago, a charter flight to Puerto Williams, a night at the hotel, then the flight to the ice. After the expedition, guests come back through the hotel before returning to Santiago. It also solves the oldest Fly Cruise headache: when Antarctic weather grounds the charter flight, you’re waiting in a 150-room hotel instead of an airport terminal.

What the Property Actually Is
150 rooms with forest or Beagle Channel views, done in warm wood tones with handcrafted pieces by Chilean artisans. The public spaces: a central Fireplace Lounge with a copper-hooded hearth, Latitude 55 restaurant built around Chilean and Patagonian ingredients, Bar Sur for regional drinks and pisco tastings, and Uncharted, a boutique for expedition essentials and Chilean keepsakes. Guided hiking, kayaking, birdwatching, and wildlife viewing fill the non-sailing hours. It runs seasonally, October through March, matching the Antarctic season.

Why a Cruise Line Is Building Hotels
Silversea is owned by Royal Caribbean Group, and the Cormorant is the clearest signal yet that expedition cruising’s growth bottleneck isn’t ships, it’s gateway infrastructure. Puerto Williams is tiny; Ushuaia across the border handles most Antarctic departures. By building the hotel with the local Pivcevic family, who run Aerovías DAP airlines and Patagonian infrastructure, Silversea is buying control of the whole journey: the flight, the hotel, the ship. Conrad Combrink, Silversea’s SVP of Expeditions, has been blunt that the hotel was never meant to be a ship extension: it’s its own product with its own identity, Chilean food, local staff trained the Silversea way. The only thing identical to the ships, he says, is the linen.
I’ve watched expedition cruising explode over the last five years, and the Fly Cruise is the product that unlocked Antarctica for people who won’t do the Drake. A purpose-built hotel at the gateway was inevitable. That it’s the southernmost hotel on earth is a nice line for the brochure, but the real story is simpler: Silversea just removed the worst night of the trip.
