Dia de Muertos at Mayakoba: A Four-Resort Celebration on the Riviera Maya

Dia de Muertos Mayakoba runs October 29 to November 1, with Between Worlds boat processions, a cenote symphony, and four resorts celebrating together.

There is no better weekend to be on the Riviera Maya than this one. Mayakoba’s Dia de Muertos celebration runs October 29 through November 1. It turns the entire 595-acre destination into a stage for Mexico’s most moving holiday. Four resorts take part: Banyan Tree, Fairmont, Rosewood, and the newly opened Alila Mayakoba. Lagoons, canals, and mangroves connect them all.

Between Worlds on the water

The centerpiece is Between Worlds, a nighttime electric-boat procession through Mayakoba’s canals. It runs October 30 through November 1 from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. Meanwhile, boats depart from MK Blue at Banyan Tree. They glide past floating art installations and live performances. In addition, the procession follows the legend of Zunu, a hummingbird said to carry messages between worlds. It is complimentary for registered guests. You do not need a reservation.

A boat procession through dark canals, lit by art and performance, is a long way from a hotel lobby altar. That is the point. Mayakoba is staging Dia de Muertos the way the holiday deserves: as a journey, not a display.

Symphony in a Cenote and Souls & Legends

The weekend’s other anchors are just as ambitious. Symphony in a Cenote takes place October 30 at Fairmont, music performed inside one of the region’s natural sinkholes. Then, the main event, Souls & Legends, lands November 1 at La Laguna, the destination’s central lagoon. Organizers expect around 1,000 guests across the weekend.

The food is half the story

Dia de Muertos is a holiday built around offerings, and Mayakoba’s kitchens are taking that seriously. Michelin-starred chefs Roberto Alcocer of Valle in San Diego and Steven Molnar of Quetzal in Toronto lead a cooking class. They teach it at the El Pueblito Cooking School alongside Fairmont Executive Chef Daniel Noguera. Banyan Tree hosts a Dinner of Legends, pairing cuisine with Maya storytelling, and Rosewood’s Ceiba Negra Dinner runs October 30. Across the destination, more than 25 restaurants take part. The Greg Norman-designed El Camaleon golf course is part of the backdrop for guests who want a round between events.

The rest of the weekend

Rosewood’s program fills the gaps with Zunu alebrije painting, Catrina face painting, and a Dia de Muertos Parade. It also includes a Balche Ancestral Communion on November 2. That extends the resort’s celebration one day past the destination-wide program. It is the kind of detail that rewards staying the extra night.

Finally, if you are anywhere near the Riviera Maya this weekend, Mayakoba’s Dia de Muertos is the one to see. It is a rare chance to experience the holiday from inside a destination that built its whole weekend around it. You will not watch from the sidelines.
