As someone who enjoys unique culinary experiences, I’ve always admired Holland America Line’s commitment to bringing exceptional dining to the seas. Recently, they raised the bar even higher by creating what they believe is the longest maki sushi roll ever crafted aboard a ship—an impressive 90-foot-long masterpiece!
An Ambitious Culinary Feat
The incredible feat occurred aboard the Rotterdam on March 30, under the guidance of none other than Chef Masaharu Morimoto, Holland America Line’s Global Fresh Fish Ambassador. Chef Morimoto, joined by over 50 talented culinary team members, dedicated themselves to this extraordinary challenge. The roll featured a delicious mix of ingredients including Nori seaweed, over 55 pounds of sushi rice, and 33 pounds of fresh Big Eye Tuna fish.
Chef Morimoto expressed his excitement, stating, “Creating the longest sushi maki roll at sea for Holland America was a thrilling challenge, which allowed me to showcase our commitment to using the highest quality and freshest ingredients in a fun and memorable way for Holland America guests.”
Introducing Morimoto By Sea Sushi Bar
This special culinary event coincided with Chef Morimoto’s launch of the Morimoto By Sea sushi bar aboard the Rotterdam during a Caribbean voyage from March 28 to 31. The new specialty sushi bar, which seats just 12 guests, promises an intimate, premium sushi experience. After its inaugural sailing on Rotterdam, Morimoto By Sea sushi bars will also be available aboard Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam, and Eurodam from March through June 2025.
This sushi bar complements the already beloved Morimoto By Sea stand-alone restaurant, first introduced on Nieuw Amsterdam in 2023, as well as the popular pop-up experiences available aboard Holland America ships.
