Placencia is a small coral island of incomparable beauty situated off the coast of Belize, where white sand lies gently on the Caribbean Sea. Following the creation of the ultimate private island escape with Gladden Private Island, Private Islands CEO Chris Krolow and his development partner David Keener returned to this Central American holiday hotspot to deliver another stylish hideaway. Opening in the summer of 2019, Kanu Private Island is only 15 minutes by boat from the mainland, but it provides a one-of-a-kind sanctuary.
The 2.5-acre island ensures privacy with five huge 1,000-square-foot villas, each containing a breezily chic master bedroom suite, high bamboo ceilings, huge resort bathrooms with outdoor showers, high end finish out and custom local furniture. Some villas also have large soaking tubs and one has a loft for kids.
At the heart of the island is the vast central palm-thatched area that comprises a living room, dining room, small bar and kitchen flanked by the large indoor freshwater pool and swimming bar. The palettes of calming nature include coral and beautiful rosewood flooring with marine and sunny shades.
But Kanu‘s true star is the blissful sea, which can be seen at each turn. Due to the fish-filled house coral reef right off the island, underwater sights are equally impressive. For an even more detailed view of the region’s well established aquatic ecosystem, a 20-minute boat ride brings tourists to the Belize Barrier Reef.
