In a landmark achievement for sustainability in the spirits industry, Aspen Vodka has announced that its distillery is the first U.S. distillery to be awarded the prestigious LEEDv4 BD+C Platinum certification. This accolade, the highest standard for building energy efficiency designated by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), signifies a groundbreaking advancement in environmentally conscious spirits production.
Leading the Way in Environmental Stewardship
Aspen Vodka’s founder, Matthew Patel, expressed immense pride in this accomplishment. “Producing a luxury vodka with unrivaled quality at the world’s cleanest distillery sets a new benchmark for sustainability,” Patel stated. “Our LEEDv4 BD+C Platinum certification is a testament to our commitment to excellence in both quality and environmental stewardship. We hope to inspire our industry peers to elevate their sustainability efforts.”
This certification places Aspen Vodka’s distillery among an elite group, being one of only three LEEDv4 BD+C Platinum projects in Colorado and the only distillery in the U.S. to achieve this level of certification. Peter Templeton, President and CEO of USGBC, lauded Aspen Vodka’s achievement, highlighting the rigorous third-party verification process that underscores the certification’s prestige.
Sustainable Practices at Aspen Vodka Distillery
The Aspen Vodka distillery, located on a rehabilitated former lumber yard, spans 18,000 square feet and incorporates several innovative sustainable practices. Key highlights include:
- Renewable Energy: The distillery is powered by a combination of on and off-site solar energy and battery storage, supplying 105% of its energy needs. This means it contributes more renewable energy to the grid than it consumes.
- Wastewater Treatment: An on-site, energy-neutral wastewater treatment system generates zero carbon emissions and improves water quality. 100% of the distilling process wastewater is treated before being returned to the Roaring Fork River.
- Carbon Footprint: Through a comprehensive building life cycle assessment, the distillery has achieved a 26% reduction in embodied carbon.
Governor Polis of Colorado praised Aspen Vodka’s efforts, recognizing their contribution to the state’s clean energy goals. “Aspen Vodka Distillery’s work is an important step in our plan to reduce pollution and achieve our goal of making buildings 100% renewable by 2040,” Polis said.
A Luxury Vodka with Environmental Integrity
Aspen Vodka, crafted from the pristine waters of the Roaring Fork River and Colorado Red Winter Wheat, has already garnered acclaim, including a Double Gold Medal at the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The brand is now expanding its reach, with plans to enter markets in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Nevada, New York, and Texas.
Sean Penn, Co-President and COO of WES Brands, expressed excitement about the expansion. “As the first distillery in North America with LEEDv4 BD+C Platinum certification, we’re not only leading in sustainability but also taking this exceptional spirit to the masses,” Penn stated. “Sharing our spirit with a wider audience is the next step in our journey and an incredible opportunity to extend our reach to new markets.”
Aspen Vodka’s achievement is a testament to the possibilities of combining luxury with sustainability. As the brand continues to expand, it sets a new standard for environmentally responsible spirits production, paving the way for future advancements in the industry.
