6 minute read

There’s this very specific moment people go through when they think their car’s doing totally fine, then an appraiser comes along, takes one look, and the value drops like it’s been through a war. Oh yeah, actually, when it comes to classic cars, it’s even worse. But what’s even the deal here, though? Well, it’s honestly hilarious, well,  in a painful way, of course. Because yeah, the car probably drives great, sounds great, and looks decent enough from ten feet away.

Okay, but what’s even the problem here? But what about up close? Well, it’s all the tiny, weird little things that didn’t seem like a big deal somehow turn into major price-destroyers. And people always act shocked, like How did this even happen? It’s never the big and dramatic stuff either. Like, it’s not the blown engine or the mystery rattle (those obviously can affect it, though).

Actually, it’s just the subtle things that creep up while you’re just living your life. It’s the kind of stuff you only notice when someone else points it out, and by that point, it’s already dragging the price down. So, okay, yeah, here’s what really chips away at your car’s worth without you even realizing it’s happening.

Faded Headlights

Yeah, a lot of people don’t actually see this one coming. So, headlights age faster than anyone expects. You see that cloudy, yellowed look start creeping in (takes years of course), and for the most part, the entire front of the car looks exhausted, even if everything else is spotless. And of course, buyers notice instantly. They look at those headlights and mentally add extra years to the car’s age (which is what they should do),

Now, you might be surprised to hear this, but even newer cars fall victim to this just because of sun exposure, weather, and everyday wear. It doesn’t take much at all for headlights to start dragging the whole car down.

Sticky Buttons

Yeah, this one basically sounds gross, right? You probably immediately think of people eating and drinking in the car, kids’ sticky fingers, all of that. And yeah, sticky buttons are one of those embarrassing little things that instantly age a car (well, that and make it feel super unclean). But yeah, you press a button, and it hesitates or feels tacky for half a second, and that alone just makes it clear that the entire interior feels old.

But of course, there’s the things like sunscreen, lotion, crumbs, dust, and, well, anything on your hands gets on those buttons. So, once they get sticky, it takes forever to make them feel normal again. Buyers (understandably) poke everything when they inspect a car, and once they hit a sticky button, the value starts dipping fast because it signals wear people don’t want to deal with, but rightfully so, of course.

You wouldn’t want to buy a sticky car, would you?

That Outside Layer of Film

Since the above was about cleanliness, it should still definitely continue, because so many people try and sell dirty cars, and what are they even thinking? So, cars get this weird film on the paint over time. That’s normal, your car is out in the elements all the time, so dust, pollen, road grime, whatever floats around outside, is just building up on your car’s exterior.

Now, even so, it builds up slowly until the paint starts looking tired, even when you think the car looks decent. So, from far away it’s fine, but up close there’s a dull layer sitting on everything. Some people try to keep up with it using services like a mobile car wash, and honestly, it helps because that buildup happens fast, but most people fall behind without even realizing it. Basically, you need regular car washings.

Do You Have Dusty Dashboards?

Everyone has been guilty of this, your average person doesn’t really think about cleaning this (let alone thinking about the dust that’s in their car). But the second they’re seeing someone else’s car, yep, they notice it. So, a dusty dashboard is honestly ruthless. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been on top of every oil change for years. But dust makes buyers instantly assume the rest of the car is neglected.

Oh, and if sunlight’s been hitting that dust for a while, it bakes into a dull film that makes the interior look older, no matter how well the car runs. It just looks a little gross; you’ve seen it for yourself.

Those Scratches Tell Way too Many Stories

Yes, by all means, it’s true, scratches are just entirely unavoidable here. That’s just how it all is. But parking lots produce them, plus, kids throw things, keys slip, grocery carts hit your car,  and then scratches show up that you don’t even remember happening. That’s just how it is; everyone deals with it. Now, even though that’s common, and it’s just life, buyers still don’t like it.

Yeah, in fact, buyers see scratches as a whole narrative about how the car’s been treated. Even tiny ones. They look at them and imagine the car’s lived a rougher life than it actually has. And once they start imagining that, the price drops.

Those Odd Smells

If only it were that “new car smell”, right? But do you notice any smells? Well, smells are brutal because you stop noticing them in your own car. You’re just used to it. So, the second someone else points it out, chances are, you’re probably hit by surprise. But new people? They smell everything instantly.

It’s usually caused by old coffee spills, damp jackets, takeout bags, gym shoes, whatever’s happened in that car over the past few years. But of course, for anyone, smells make buyers hesitate immediately. Even faint odors make the interior feel older and more worn than it actually is.

Steering Wheel Wear

Yep, last, but definitely not least here! So, the steering wheel exposes everything. Now, sure, even if the seats are clean and the dashboard’s fine, the steering wheel gives away the real age. But what exactly? Well, it’s just faded spots, peeling leather, smooth places where hands always sit, all of it shows exactly how long the car’s been in use.
