Europe is a continent with a very rich and lengthy history. It’s packed with inspiring landmarks and natural vistas, and, as such, it’s become a go-to destination for couples in search of a little romance and magic.
The bad news is that many of these places have become overcrowded, expensive, and just a little cliché. The good news is that the continent also provides plenty of alternative spots – where the pace is slower, and the experience is truly private and memorable, rather than being merely photogenic.
Coastal Escapes Along the Mediterranean
Much of the appeal of Europe stems from the body of water that defines its southern flank. There are countless iconic ports and islands dotted around the region, including smaller coastal towns and obscure coves and hideaways. You might stick to Monaco, or you might take a tour of the wider French Riviera, the Amalfi Coast, and the various archipelagos that lie further east.
A luxury yacht charter, Mediterranean style, is often the best way to see and do all of these things. You’ll get an additional layer of privacy, and the ability to dictate the pace of your own adventures.
Storybook Towns Without the Crowds
If you’re looking to avoid crowds, then the place that you visit, as well as the time of year, really matters. Venice and Paris are popular – but this is a downside. On the other hand, you might look at smaller historic towns, which can often feel far more authentic. If you’re only staying for a matter of days, then you’ll be able to easily move from one location to the next, without ever feeling rushed.
Countryside Retreats
Agriturismo is a form of tourism, popular in Italy, that involves staying on, or near, a working farm. But if you’re heading out into the countryside, you’ll naturally be able to avoid the crowds, wherever you might travel. There are rolling vineyards, hilltop villas, and a range of boutique stays to explore, in Tuscany, Provence, Alsace, and elsewhere.
Island Hopping
If you’re heading out to an island, then you’ll want to pick one that offers the kind of experience you’re looking for. It’s often best to avoid crowded ferries and teeming nightclubs – unless that’s the kind of thing that you’re looking for. When it comes to romance, the more obscure islands tend to be the best ones. But that doesn’t mean that popular destinations, like Rhodes and Ibiza, don’t have anything to offer.
