When I heard they were making a film about Edward Snowden, I couldn’t help but cringe. I was sure this was another poor Hollywood mistake, trying to capitalize on a situation we know little about.

Close your eyes and listen to Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s voice, who plays Edward Snowden in the film, you will think you are listening to the actual Snowden speaking. I worried when I heard they casted him, not because I think he’s a bad actor, but because I thought this film might flop hard enough to put him out of work for a bit. Of course, Edward Snowden is still a hot topic, and still considered one of the most wanted men in the world, but I questioned whether or not confused Americans will even go see the film. Then again, when you have Academy Award-winning director Oliver Stone at the helm, I think they’ll be ok.

Co-starring alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt is Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans, and Nicolas Cage. Watch the first official trailer for SNOWDEN above.

SNOWDEN arrives in theaters on September 16, 2016.
