There’s something about a vintage pilot’s watch that just hits different. The oversized dials, the purpose-built design, the sense that this thing was made to actually do something important. That’s exactly what made the original BENRUS Sky Chief such a legend when it first appeared in 1940, and it’s why I’m genuinely excited to see it come back.
BENRUS just announced the return of the Sky Chief Chronograph, and this isn’t some loosely inspired “heritage” piece with a familiar name slapped on it. This is a proper reissue that respects what made the original great while making thoughtful updates for modern wrists.
The Original Sky Chief’s Legacy
For those unfamiliar, BENRUS built its reputation on military and aviation watches long before “pilot’s watch” became a marketing buzzword. The brand had already made a name with models like the Flyer and Pilot in the 1930s, but the Sky Chief took things further. It was designed specifically for the cockpit, featuring a deeply domed crystal and slim bezel that created this distinctive porthole effect. The result was a dial that was dramatically easier to read mid-flight.
The tri-compax chronograph layout became a go-to for aviators, and an aeronautical graduation on the minute counter allowed pilots to make real-time cruise calculations and air navigation adjustments. This was a genuine tool watch in every sense of the word.
What’s New in the 2026 Edition
The modern Sky Chief keeps the proportions that made the original so wearable. At 36mm in diameter with an 11.9mm case height, it wears like a classic pilot’s watch should: present but not bulky. The 316L stainless steel case features a screw-down crown, and the double-domed box sapphire crystal with dual anti-reflective coating is a smart nod to the original’s curved glass while offering far better scratch resistance and readability.
Under the hood sits the Swiss-made ETA 2894 automatic chronograph movement, and BENRUS went the extra mile with COSC chronometer certification. That’s a meaningful distinction at this price point, delivering verified precision along with a 42-hour power reserve. Flip the watch over and you can admire the movement through the open sapphire case back.
The dial work is particularly well done. A glossy lacquered sunburst finish is paired with azuré-finished sub-counters that catch light beautifully, and BG W9 Super-LumiNova on the numerals and hands ensures you can read the time in low-light conditions without squinting. It’s available in two colorways: Stratus Grey and Cirrus White. Both come on a grey leather strap with a polished pin buckle, and a secondary black leather strap is available if you want to switch things up.
Water resistance sits at 100 meters, which is more than adequate for daily wear and the occasional unexpected splash.
My Take
What I appreciate about this reissue is the restraint. BENRUS didn’t try to modernize the Sky Chief into something unrecognizable. They kept the 36mm case (refreshing in a market that still leans oversized), they preserved the porthole aesthetic with that domed sapphire crystal, and they chose a movement that genuinely earns its place in the watch. The COSC certification is a nice touch that signals BENRUS is serious about this being more than a nostalgia play.
At $3,950, it sits in a competitive space. You’re up against microbrands with impressive specs and some entry-level Swiss chronographs from bigger names. But what those watches don’t have is this specific heritage story, and BENRUS has a real one to tell. For collectors and aviation watch enthusiasts, the Sky Chief fills a very specific gap in the market.
If you’re a watch person who gravitates toward vintage-inspired pilots’ chronographs with actual historical roots, the Sky Chief deserves a serious look.
