Top 3 Narrative Shorts at SXSW 2014

This year’s SXSW festival was huge. And I want to emphasize the size, it was huge. I attended three years ago, and it was an absolute blast. Not only did we have Platinum badges and were moved to the front of every line, but the lines themselves weren’t that long.

Prospect

Director: Zeek Earl, Christopher Caldwell

Another feat of production value. This is the story of a father-daughter duo who are out on a remote planet mining for a rare and valuable resin. They are armed and have a spaceship. Lo and behold there’s another miner on this planet and he means business, but so does the young lady who has to grow up quick (and also handles a gun quite well).

This must have been shot in Sequoia National Forest or some other wonderfully off-world appearing location. The VFX are just enough to make you feel like you are really on an alien planet whose air is hugely toxic. The space suit costumes are also very reminiscent of 1970’s space exploration films, not too complex but enough to get the job done.
