The High Five by Michael Jacobs

The High Five

Director: Michael Jacobs

So you may have not been aware (as I wasn’t), that the high five was born in 1977. Yes, less than 40 years ago, people shared joy and adulation with mere words and hugs. It wasn’t until Glenn Burke, a Los Angeles Dodger, met his teammate at home plate with a guttural motion that will most likely stand the test of time.

The doc explores the fanfare surrounding the moment, and the uncomfortable trade that the Dodgers organization made shortly thereafter. Glenn was traded to Oakland, and most suspect the reason was because he was gay. Glenn suffered an untimely end after losing his fight with AIDS. His mark on sports and society however, will be felt forever.
