If you are weighing a Pinnacle-class ship against one of the older hulls, you are not really choosing between new and old. You are choosing between a bigger theater and more square footage to yourself.
I have sailed both a Pinnacle-class ship and one of the older Vista and Signature hulls, and the older ship felt roomier. That sounds backwards until you divide gross tonnage by guest count, which I do further down. How many ships does Holland America Line have?
Holland America Line has 11 ships in service in 2026: three Pinnacle-class, two Signature-class, four Vista-class, and two R-class. There are no newbuilds on order, which makes 2021 Rotterdam the newest ship in the fleet for the foreseeable future.

Worth flagging, because older versions of this list got it wrong and so do plenty of others: Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, Westerdam and Noordam are Vista-class ships, not Signature-class. Only Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam are Signature-class. Volendam and Zaandam sit in their own R-class category, which Holland America also lists as Rotterdam class.
Why the oldest Holland America ships have the most space per guest
Run the tonnage math on the Holland America fleet and the ranking inverts. The four Vista ships and the two R-class ships all land around 43 gross tons per guest. The three Pinnacle ships, the newest and largest in the fleet, land at 37 to 38. Koningsdam carries about 1,200 more guests than Zuiderdam in roughly 17,500 more tons of ship, so the extra people arrive faster than the extra space does.
That gap is about 14 percent, and it is the single most useful number in this entire post. It does not mean the older ships are better. It means the newer ships spent their extra tonnage on things you use some of the time, like the two-deck World Stage theater and the Music Walk venues, while the older ships spread it across corridors, public rooms and open deck you move through constantly. On the Pinnacle ship I sailed, the entertainment was clearly a step up. The older hull was the one where I never waited for an elevator.
If you are booking a long itinerary, a repositioning crossing, or anything with a lot of sea days, the space ratio deserves more weight than the delivery year. If you are booking a seven-night Caribbean sailing where you will be off the ship half the week, the newer venues probably win.
What the Evolution refit changes, and which ships get it
In April 2026 Holland America announced Evolution, a multiyear program putting more than $500 million into six existing ships. It covers all four Vista-class ships, Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, Westerdam and Noordam, plus both Signature-class ships, Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam. The three Pinnacle ships are not part of it because most of what Evolution adds already exists on them.
Oosterdam goes first, drydocking at Fincantieri’s Palermo yard in fall 2027 and returning to service on October 31, 2027, about five weeks earlier than the original plan after Holland America moved the schedule up and cancelled a run of departures between September and December 2027. It picks up 76 new staterooms, including 30 purpose-built solo verandah cabins, two 900-square-foot Bridgeview suites, a reimagined 1,550-square-foot Pinnacle Suite, 24 Vista suites, and the Grand Dutch Cafe, which until now has only been on the Pinnacle ships.
Here is the part the press release does not spell out. Those 76 staterooms put roughly 150 more guests on Oosterdam at double occupancy, which drops its space ratio from 43 down toward 40 unless the rebuild adds tonnage. Post-Evolution Oosterdam will be a better-equipped ship than it is today and a slightly tighter one. If the roomy, quiet version of a Vista ship is what you are after, sailing one before its drydock is the way to get it.
Is Holland America building any new ships?
No. Holland America has nothing on order in 2026, and Evolution is the answer to why. The line is spending half a billion dollars modernizing hulls it already owns rather than ordering a fourth Pinnacle ship.
Rotterdam arrived in October 2021, so the fleet has now gone five years without a new ship. That is the longest stretch since the six-year gap between Nieuw Amsterdam in 2010 and Koningsdam in 2016, and the practical effect is that the newest Holland America ship you can book in 2028 will be a seven-year-old Rotterdam or a freshly rebuilt Oosterdam. Volendam and Zaandam, both past 26 years old, are the obvious candidates to leave the fleet next, though Holland America has not announced anything.
Which Holland America ship class to book
Pinnacle class (Rotterdam, Nieuw Statendam, Koningsdam) is the pick for first-time Holland America guests, anyone who cares about live music and production entertainment, and anyone traveling with people who need more to do. These are the ships with World Stage, the Music Walk cluster of venues, Rudi’s Sel de Mer and the Grand Dutch Cafe. You trade about 14 percent of your personal space for it.
Vista and Signature class (Noordam, Westerdam, Oosterdam, Zuiderdam, Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam) is the pick for sea-day itineraries, Alaska, and anyone who has sailed Holland America before and knows what they actually use onboard. Six of these ships are going through Evolution between 2027 and the early 2030s, so which version you get depends on your sail date.
R class (Volendam, Zaandam) is the smallest pair in the fleet at 1,432 guests, which opens up ports the bigger ships cannot reach and makes them the interesting choice for Alaska’s narrower waterways and longer exotic itineraries.
