Perhaps one day we’ll live in a world where car theft is a distant memory – that day is not today though. So, until it comes it’s a great idea to invest in some car security for your own peace of mind and the protection of your vehicle or wallet.

This is especially the case if you own a car that’s particularly desirable or vulnerable. There might be safer options available – just browse the thousands of used cars for sale in the UK and you’re bound to find loads that suit your needs. Not that you should feel duty-bound to change your car for security purposes, but it can be a useful thing to hold in your mind while car shopping.

You can even look up your prospective purchase on the Thatcham Research website to see what an independent organization makes of its security provisions.

But, if you’re making do with the car you have, here are some options to keep it secure.

Faraday pouches

Many modern cars have keyless entry systems, and these can be really vulnerable to attack by enterprising criminals with just a simple electronic device. If your car’s on the driveway and your keys are by the front door, it doesn’t take much to amplify that signal so that your pride and joy can be unlocked within minutes.

A Faraday pouch blocks the signals from a key fob by containing it inside a metallic lining. Without a signal from the key, thieves can’t get it unlocked.

They’re simple and affordable, but very effective indeed.

Car trackers

Tracking devices range from around £30 to hundreds of pounds, but they can be very useful. If a thief makes off with your car, a tracker allows you and/or the police to monitor its movements, offering you the best opportunity to get it back.
The best models offer 24-hour tracking support and extend right into mainland Europe – they can even monitor the car underground or into a metal container. If you own a particularly expensive model, or perhaps a classic with sentimental value, it’s definitely a worthy investment.

Wheel locks

An old-fashioned wheel lock may seem like a bit of a throwback but it’s a great way to protect your car, and acts as an effective visual deterrent too. It’s worth spending a good amount on a lock from a reputable manufacturer – cheap ones are so easily bypassed that they’re not worth your time or money.

Wheel clamps

Wheel clamps are a visual deterrent but also very effective. They’re ideal for use on vehicles that don’t get used very often, such as campervans or motorhomes, and great for long-term use.

Make sure to check your chosen clamp fits on the wheels of your car, as one size does not fit all. And the best ones have a cover for the wheel nuts, to prevent thieves from merely removing the wheel, clamp and all.

Garage security

If you have a garage – use it! Many people in the UK use their garages as extensions of the garden shed, but ask yourself, would you rather someone steal your lawnmower or your family car?

Garage security systems can be uprated too, with a reinforced door lock a great place to start. You could also fit an alarm or a home CCTV system to keep you alert while you’re away from home.
